The Korean Central News Agency reported on 22 March 2020 that Kim Yo Jong issued a statement revealing that Kim Jong Un received a letter from U.S. president Donald Trump.

OF THE TWO LEADERS OF THE DPRK AND THE U.S.

We received a personal letter of President Donald Trump of the United States of America sent to Comrade Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission.

We see it as a good judgment and correct action for the president of the United States to send a personal letter again and dedicate effort in continuing to maintain the excellent relations with our Comrade Chairman during the time such as now when huge difficulties and challenges lie across the development of relations between the two countries of the DPRK and the U.S., and we naturally think of it as something that should receive high assessment.

President Trump conveyed in this personal letter his happy impression on the news that his congratulatory greetings that was sent the last time on the occasion of the birthday of the Comrade Chairman was correctly conveyed and his warm greetings that wished for the health of the family of the Comrade Chairman and our people.

President Trump explained in the personal letter his plan for propelling the relations of the two countries of the DPRK and the U.S. and expressed his intention to cooperate in the sector of virus prevention while expressing that he was moved by the efforts of the Comrade Chairman of the State Affairs Commission in striving for the protection of his people from the serious threat of epidemic.

President Trump regarded his relations with Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission as valuable and conveyed his intention being in close connection with the Chairman of the State Affairs Commission in the future while mentioning that there are difficulties in informing his thoughts by not being able to communicate often recently.

We see such personal letter of President Trump as an example that shows well his special and firm personal close relations with Comrade Chairman Kim Jong Un.

Even Comrade Chairman Kim Jong Un expressed his gratitude to the warm personal letter of the president while asserting once again on the special personal close relations between him and President Trump.

Fortunately, the personal relations between the two leaders are not too far away like the still antagonistic relations between the two countries and are very excellent.

However, the relations between the DPRK and the U.S. and its development should not be hastily assessed on the personal close relations between the two leaders and no further predictions and expectations should not be made based on this.

Of course, despite the positive action because of the closeness between these persons representing the two countries, it is unknown how much this personal close relations can change and tow the development of the relations of the two countries and it is not good to make hasty conclusions or be optimistic about it.

When fairness and balance is not guaranteed and unilateral and greed thoughts are not taken away, the relations of the two countries shall continue to deteriorate.

In my personal opinion, the relations of the two countries and the talks for them can be thought of only when balance is dynamically and morally maintained and fairness is guaranteed between the two countries without the personal letters between the two leaders.

We are hard at work even at this moment to develop and defend ourselves on our own amid the hard environment keenly “provided” by the United States.

Despite hoping for the day when the relations of the two countries would be as good as the relations between the two leaders, we should leave it to time and see if this is possible.

However, we are not going to lose or waste time for nothing and continue to change and become stronger on our own during this time as has changed from two years ago.
